How to use a sauna properly

Proper sauna bathing benefits both body and mind. Here’s a simple guide to help you enjoy your time in the sauna to the fullest, while respecting your own pace.

A sauna is more than just heat. It is a space where the body relaxes, the mind calms down, and everything unimportant can step aside for a while. To make your time in the sauna have the right effect, it is good to know a few simple principles. They will help you feel better, make the most of sauna bathing, and at the same time respect your body and its current needs.

1. Give yourself time for a calm start

Before you enter the sauna, take a few minutes to settle down. Ideally, treat yourself to a short shower, dry off gently, and get in the mood for silence. The sauna is not a place for rushing or talking. It is a moment when everything unnecessary can briefly stop.

2. In the sauna only as long as it feels comfortable

The recommended time in the sauna is 8 to 15 minutes. However, there is no need to stick to this limit at all costs. Listen to your body. If you do not feel well, leave earlier. If, on the contrary, you are comfortable staying a little longer, there is no need to limit yourself. The basis is your own feeling and your body’s natural response.

Sit or lie down comfortably on a towel. You can also use two different bench heights. The higher you go, the greater the heat. If it is your first time in the sauna, it is better to stay lower.

3. Cooling down as a natural transition

After leaving the sauna comes the cooling phase. This helps the body recover more quickly and deepens the feeling of relaxation. You can use a cold shower or spend a moment in fresh air. Again, what matters is your own comfort. Cooling down should be pleasant, not shocking.

4. Rest is part of the experience

After each round, give yourself a few minutes of peace. Use the loungers or sit in the quiet part of the relaxation area. At this moment, the body is completing the regeneration process, the temperature stabilizes, and the effect of the sauna fully unfolds. Only then does it make sense to enter again.

5. How many times and how often

Two to three sauna rounds are ideal. More may no longer be well tolerated by the body, especially if you are not used to it. Sauna bathing is recommended once or twice a week. Less may be enough; more is usually not necessary. It is better to enjoy it fully than to treat it as a routine.

6. Don’t forget to drink

After sauna bathing, it is advisable to replenish fluids. Water, lightly mineralized drinks, or herbal tea are the ideal choice. Avoid alcohol or sugary sodas. Your body deserves gentle care from within as well.

Sauna bathing is not just a health-promoting activity. It is also a space for returning to yourself. Calm, heat, silence, and time free of distractions. At Hotel Mauricius, we offer you an environment where you do not have to be distracted by anything. Just listen to your body and give it exactly what it needs.
